Dental sedation involves a mild injection in the arm or back of the hand from our visiting sedation expert, Dr Drew Gibson.

Patients requiring wisdom tooth removal, implants, complex cosmetic dentistry and root canal treatments often make this choice and we are happy to accommodate it.

It is particularly useful in helping nervous dental patients or patients with a dental phobia.

Here are some of the things you should know about dental sedation in our Glasgow practice.

  1. You must be accompanied to/from the practice by a friend or family member.
  2. You cannot drive/operate machinery/work/take responsibility for children/make important decisions for 24 hours after treatment.
  3. Reasonable health and BMI are preferred for this treatment. This technique involves the use of midazolam which is a benzodiazepine.
  4. It makes patients very relaxed and sleepy but not completely unconscious. You will not remember the treatment by the following day.

In certain cases of extreme anxiety or patients with more medically challenging circumstances, it might be possible to arrange for IV sedation using continuous infusion of propofol with an anaesthetist.

Dr Murphy is currently engaged in dialogue to have this type of sedation brought to our dental surgery in Glasgow.

This represents a deeper level of sedation and patients generally nod off before treatment commences.

We will make every effort to have as much treatment as is reasonably possible carried out in each sedation visit to reduce the impact on you and your schedule.
