Mini dental implants, as the name suggests, are simply smaller fixtures within the jaw bone.

The good news, in some cases quite surprising in fact, is that mini dental implants in Glasgow have proven to be clinically as effective as larger dental implants.

This is borne out by both the clinical research and results within our Glasgow surgery.

For example a 3mm wide/8.5mm long implant is no more or less likely to succeed than a 5mm wide/15mm long fixture.

Mini implants are generally considered to be those of diameter 3.5mm or less. The range generally used is 3.0-6.0mm. Shorter implants are generally considered to be any fixtures less than 9mm in length.

Most dental practitioners will stipulate a healing and integration period of two to four months prior to placing final restorations (porcelain crowns, bridgework or dentures) on the implants.

The surface of the implants integrates almost to the point of fusion with bone. This relationship is different from that between tooth and bone which hinges on a very thin ligament which is prone to bacterial ingress.

The latter can cause pocketing around teeth or gum disease. This is less likely to happen on implant patients with a well maintained mouth.

We should always stress that regular hygiene visits are an essential method of maintaining good gum health around both remaining teeth and implants. Patients are encouraged to improve hygiene towards the point of perfection in all respects.

The benefits of mini dental implants are that treatments can prove to be effective and permanent as well as reducing future and potentially avoidable dental bills! That should be the focus of every dental professional and patient.
