Stained Teeth and Porcelain Veneers Case Study

Gregor travelled to Crystal from the Western Isles. We have many patients from that part of Scotland as they see Glasgow as a competitive environment when it comes to the prices for cosmetic dental treatments.

His chief complaints were the colour of his teeth, level of staining and gum recession with linked dentine sensitivity.

We discussed teeth whitening but he had tried this previously and it was agreed to forego that treatment option in favour of a more conservative/natural approach.

The sensitivity was treated with a prescribed toothpaste. Dr Murphy advised that the patient refrain from using Corsodyl mouthwash, since this was causing excessive staining on all teeth.

The key to successful long term results in this case was to remove absolutely no enamel from the outer surfaces as this would exacerbate sensitivity.

It was agreed that eight porcelain veneers would be the treatment of choice, since this would reduce the likelihood of further staining which can recur when using some composite bonding techniques.

A minimal amount (1mm) of enamel was removed from the biting surfaces to ensure that porcelain would be sufficiently strong enough and resistant to more heavy biting forces.

Alec, our ceramist did a very good job when attending chair-side for porcelain shade matching. He has given the patient a very natural result with invisible veneer margins and an aesthetic gum emergence.

Gregor’s review of his porcelain veneers:

I got exactly what I came for when I decided on Crystal Dental Care. Brendan didn’t try to sell me anything but focused on reducing my symptoms first and protecting my teeth, which are now much less sensitive because of the techniques used. The cosmetic aspect is an absolute bonus – I didn’t think veneers looked so natural. Thanks to Brendan and the girls.

Porcelain Veneers now cost £390 per tooth at Crystal Dental Care.
